Andy Burnham, John Healey and the Labour government just used the budget to set the stage for a snap general election. More borrowing. More spending. And no action on dealing with the deeper problems that now seriously threaten to engulf Britain.
The country is now standing on a cliff-edge.
More than £3 trillion in national debt. The tax burden heading to the highest level in British history. Welfare spending set to surpass £430 billion — or six times what we are currently spending on national defence. Mass immigration to add another one million people to our population over the next five years — equivalent to adding two cities the size of Liverpool. Another £10 billion for Ukraine and roughly £13 billion for other nations through overseas aid. And behind it all: Britain’s struggling workers and responsible savers who are now being forced to subsidise enormous numbers of people who are not even working at all, or who entered Britain illegally.
Put simply, we are in dangerous times.
The social contract is being stretched like never before. The British people’s sense of fairness is being tested like never before. Nobody in power seems to have an answer to Britain’s broken economic model. We are just one more external shock away from a major financial or debt crisis. And as even one expert from the Office for Budget Responsibility conceded yesterday: we are now living through “a dismal period” in our country’s economic history, the political implications of which remain unclear.
What we do know is that the latest opinion polls suggest things are now on the move, with the left-wing vote continuing to consolidate, insurgent parties coming under renewed pressure, and growing calls to ‘Unite the Right’ to stop Burnham and Labour dominating the country into the 2030s.
There is, in short, much to discuss.
This is a reminder that tomorrow — like every Friday at 9am — I’ll be meeting with our paid subscribers on the Substack App to discuss all these issues and more.
Tomorrow’s agenda: key points from the budget you might have missed; the plan for a snap election; new evidence on tactical voting; free movement and Brexit Wars II; and of course your questions, comments, and debate.
See you tomorrow and don’t worry if you cannot make it.
All live discussions including clips and the transcript will be posted immediately afterwards for our paid subscribers so they can watch at their leisure.
Best wishes, Matt

I’ll be listening.
I believe that out of all our political Leaders since the 1960s, only two have actually believed in this country and worked to improve things for its people.
One of those was Margaret Thatcher, the other is Nigel Farage.
The rest of them have been a rag-bag of dishonest, egregious, meretricious, self-absorbed and self-obsessed, pathocratic, opportunistic megalomaniacs.
And our present ‘leader’ fits all of those adjectives.
All together now, “Things can only get worser”. 🎶
